Phage Shield is a unique product for combating biofilms and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) involved in the biocorrosion process. The product has an unprecedented technology for the control of SRB and biofilms, free of chemical substances harmful to the environment, which consists of the use of bacteriophages isolated from the environment. Phage Shield has the potential to reduce the huge load of biocides that are currently used by oil and gas exploration companies. The product has high specificity for bacteria with great safety for aquatic fauna and humans.

Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) are the main microorganisms related to cases of biocorrosion of metals and biogenic acidulation (biological souring). This occurs due to the high production rate of H2S (sulfidric gas) as a product of the metabolism of this group of bacteria. As a direct consequence, we can mention the clogging of reservoirs; corrosion inside pipelines; high maintenance cost; reduction of the useful life of equipment; decreased oil recovery; reduction in the quality of the oil, in addition to possible risks and damage to workers’ health and the environment due to exposure to hydrogen sulfide. Based on this evidence, the importance of controlling these bacteria is clear and the justification for the annual use of tons of synthetic biocides that are dumped into the environment. Therefore, alternative products that can replace the biocides represents a great advance towards sustainability

Phage Mast is an innovative product, with unprecedented technology, for the control of bovine mastitis. The cocktail of bacteriophages present in Phage Mast has great specificity for the main bacteria involved in bovine mastitis, more specifically: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus uberis. Currently, there is a global movement to reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock. In addition to the current legislation that controls the use of this class of substances and imposes rules for the use of milk after antibiotic treatment protocols, the emergence of resistant strains in dairy herds has encouraged the search for alternative solutions. Thus, Phage Mast comes as a disruptive proposal in the market for the biological control of mastitis, both in prophylaxis and therapy.

Salmophages are products for Salmonella control in poultry and swine farms. Because it is of natural origin, it presents itself as a modern solution for the biological control of a chronic problem in poultry and pig farming. Mainly in periods of slaughter, where the use of antibiotics is restricted and limited, Salmophages comes as a sustainable alternative for the control of Salmonella. The bacteriophage cocktail is highly effective against different strains of Salmonella, including Salmonella Heidelberg, currently of great importance due to its resistance to several antibiotics.

The recommended use of this product is presented both for application in poultry litter and for oral administration, in a preventive and therapeutic way.

Microbiotec also performs customized developments for your problem. We have all the know-how and expertise to identify your problem, isolate the bacterial strains of interest in different matrices (eg soil, feces, oil, clinical samples, etc…) and create an appropriate phage cocktail for the strains of interest.

The development of the project can be subsidized by different sources of funding, our team has great experience in forming
these partnerships.

Bacteriophages for bacterial control

Our technology consists of a biological process for bacterial control through the use of bacteriophages (phages). In our products, we use phages isolated from the environment, which are naturally occurring and have specific characteristics for the application, such as the absence of lysogeny, virulence and resistance modules (lytic phages). Furthermore, phages only infect prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, causing no effect on other cells (eg human body cells). These characteristics give our product safety, specificity and ability to co-evolve with the target bacteria, reducing the chances of emergence of resistant strains. Lytic phages have the ability to recognize their host cell (in this case the target bacteria of interest), infect, multiply and finally produce an enzyme that digests the bacterial wall, causing its rupture and death. This whole process can take less than half an hour and generate between 100 and 200 new phages that infect other bacteria, leading to a drastic population reduction.

The use of phages represents a solution for replacing and/or reducing the use of antibiotics, in addition to combating multidrug-resistant bacteria, a major problem today.

Advantages and use
